ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for detecting injured cell nuclear DNA is provided. The method comprises the steps of subjecting a pathological tissue specimen to acid-hydrolysis to selectively hydrolyze any injured DNA thereby to form single-stranded DNA, then treating the specimen with an anti-single-stranded DNA antibody, and subjecting the specimen to morphological inspection to find the presence of the conjugation of the single-stranded DNA with the antibody. The conjugation may be discriminated either by a labelling marker of the antibody. Alternatively, a labelled secondary antibody to anti-ssDNA antibody may be used. By the method of the invention, single-stranded DNA derived from injured DNA can be easily detected with the use of an ordinary pathological fixed section without the fear of occurrence of "pseude-positive" stainability.
