A method and apparatus are provided for characterizing square wave jerks in the eye movements of a person, which may provide a powerful tool in the differential diagnosis of oculomotor and neurological disease. The method includes the steps of a) providing a sequence of saccades, b) identifying pairs of consecutive saccades of the sequence, c) determining whether each saccade of each identified pair is opposite the direction of the other saccade and, if not, then discarding the pair, d) determining whether a magnitude of each saccade of each identified pair is comparable and, if not, then discarding the pair, e) determining whether the pair of saccades of each identified pair are temporally related by a predetermined time period and, if not, then discarding the pair and f) collecting any remaining pairs of saccades as square wave jerks.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil destinés à caractériser des saccades de type ondes carrées dans les mouvements oculaires d'une personne, qui peuvent fournir un outil puissant dans le diagnostic différentiel d'une maladie oculomotrice et neurologique. Le procédé comprend les étapes consistant à a) fournir une séquence de saccades, b) identifier des paires de saccades consécutives de la séquence, c) déterminer si la direction de chaque saccade de chaque paire identifiée est opposée celle de l'autre saccade et, dans le cas contraire, écarter la paire, d) déterminer si une magnitude de chaque saccade de chaque paire identifiée est comparable et, dans le cas contraire, écarter la paire, e) déterminer si la paire de saccades de chaque paire identifiée est temporellement apparentée par une période de temps prédéterminée et, dans le cas contraire, écarter la paire et f) collecter toutes les paires de saccades restantes comme des saccades de type ondes carrées.
