ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for determining parallax effects in a stereoscopic optical system, such as a binocular range finder, is disclosed. Also disclosed is a stereoscopic optical system. An optical grating structure is disposed in the path of imaging flux of optical imaging means of the system and two electrical signals are derived by photo- electric detectors from mutually distinguishable optical fluxes received from the grating structure. The two electrical signals are subtracted from one another and one of the two electrical signals is differemtiated. The difference and differential signals are multiplied together and a control signal is derived from the prodyct signal. The control signal is indicative of the parallax effects and is utilized to control indicator means and/or control serve means for adjusting optical elements in the system to compensate for parallax effects.
