The subject of the invention is a method of discriminating and counting at least two populations of biological elements carrying specific characteristics, possibly present in a specimen. The invention makes it possible for at least three populations of biological elements to be detected unambiguously by using only two detection means. This implies that at least two populations of biological elements are detected by one and the same detection means. The invention may be carried out if three different probes are used, each recognizing and being fixed onto one of the populations of biological elements to be detected, each of the probes itself being made detectable by a different marker, two of said different markers exhibiting two emission spectra having at least one common part (overlapping emission spectra) and a third marker exhibiting an emission spectrum essentially not having any part common with the other two (non-overlapping spectrum).

L'invention a pour objet une méthode de discrimination et de comptage d'au moins deux populations d'éléments biologiques porteuses de caractéristiques spécifiques, éventuellement présentes dans un échantillon. L'invention permet la détection sans ambiguïté d'au moins trois populations d'éléments biologiques par l'utilisation de seulement deux moyens de détection, ce qui implique qu'au moins deux populations d'éléments biologiques soient détectées par un seul et même moyen de détection. L'invention peut être réalisée si l'on utilise trois sondes différentes, chacune reconnaissant et se fixant à l'une des populations d'éléments biologiques à détecter, chacune des sondes étant elle-même rendue détectable par un marqueur différent, deux desdits marqueurs différents présentant deux spectres d'émission ayant au moins une partie commune (spectres d'émission couvrants) et le troisième présentant un spectre d'émission n'ayant essentiellement aucune partie commune avec les deux autres (spectre non couvrant).
