A method of driving a matrix-type liquid crystal display device utilizes a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a plurality of scanning electrodes and a plurality of signal electrodes extending generally perpendicular to the scanning electrodes. A display is erased by bringing it into either a light transmitting state or a light scattering state, and then selectively writing pixels at each intersection between the scanning and signal electrodes to reverse their optical state. The pixels are retained in their optical states after the writing step. During the erasing step, all of the pixels are subjected to a high alternating voltage or a high direct current voltage. During the writing step, the scanning electrodes are line-sequentially selected and the signal electrodes receive a signal of a waveform effective to apply a high voltage to those pixels desired to be reversed and a low voltage to those the pixels desired to be unchanged. During the retaining step, a low alternating voltage or a low direct current voltage is applied to all of the pixels.
L'invention est une méthode d'attaque pour afficheur à cristaux liquides du type matriciel qui utilise une couche de cristaux liquides en sandwich entre une pluralité d'électrodes de balayage et une pluralité d'électrodes de signal généralement perpendiculaires aux électrodes de balayage. On supprime l'image affichée en plaçant l'afficheur dans un état d'émission de lumière ou dans un état de diffusion de lumière, puis en affichant sélectivement les pixels à chaque intersection entre les électrodes de balayage et les électrodes de signal pour inverser leur état optique. Les pixels sont maintenus dans leur nouvel état optique après leur affichage. Durant la phase d'effacement, tous les pixels sont soumis à une tension alternative élevée ou à une tension continue élevée. Durant la phase d'affichage, les électrodes de balayage sont sélectionnées ligne par ligne et les électrodes de signal reçoivent un signal approprié pour appliquer une tension élevée aux pixels dont l'état doit être inversé et une tension faible aux pixels à laisser inchangés. Durant la phase de conservation de l'état optique, une tension alternative ou continue faible est appliquée à tous les pixels.
