- 1 - Abstract: A method of driving a gas discharge light-emitting device utilizes Townsend emission occurring transiently when discharge is started. Power is applied to the device to cause discharge and the application of power is stopped approximately when the ratio of radiation output of the discharge to the charged power starts decreasing. The device has a luminous efficacy about 10 times that of prior devices.
