The present invention is directed to an improved method for drying a paper web that allows the dryer to have an increased production capacity without substantially affecting product quality. The method comprises the step of providing a through-dryer having a first dryer section and a second dryer section. A first paper web having a solids consistency between about 20% and about 40% is dried within the first dryer section at a first temperature to form a second paper web without increasing the temperature of the paper web above the thermal degradation temperature of the paper web. The method further comprises the step of subsequently drying the second paper web within the second dryer section at a second temperature which is less than the first temperature.
