ABSTRACT A method for electrolyzing an alkali metal halide solution is disclosed wherein a horizontal diaphragm electrolytic cell is employed. A diaphragm having a water-permeability of not more than 0.02 ml/cm2.cm H2O. hr. is used, and water or an electrolytic solution is supplied to the under- side of the diaphragm during electrolysis.
