ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of electroslag melting slab ingots wherein consumable electrodes are fed into the melting space of a water cooled mould with the mould simultaneously shifted vertically towards the consumable electrodes. The method comprises lowering the electrodes and raising the mould and simultaneously causing the mould to move in a horizontal plane with a recipro- cating motion.
