The present invention provides a process for obtaining sennosides A, B and Al of the formula:- Image which are substantially free from sennosides C, D and D1, and from aloe-emodin derivatives, wherein a) a sennoside mixture is reduced to rhein-9-anthrone- 8-glucoside and aloe-emodin-9-anthrone-8-glucoside, b) a liquid-liquid partitioning of the compounds obtained is carried out between a polar organic solvent which is only partly miscible with water and an aqueous phase and c) the rhein-9-anthrone-8-glucosides contained after the partitioning in the aqueous phase is again oxidised to the corresponding sennosides and these are recovered. The present invention also provides sennosides A, B and Al obtainable according to this process and pharmaceuctial compositions containing them.

L'invention porte sur une méthode pour obtenir des sennosides A, B et Al de formule Image - pratiquement exempts de sennosides C, D et D1 ainsi que de dérivés d'aloémodine -, dans laquelle : a) un mélange de sennosides est réduit en rhéin-9-anthrone-8-glucoside et en aloémodin-9-anthrone-8-glucoside; b) un fractionnement liquide-liquide des composés obtenus est effectué entre un solvant organique polaire qui n'est que partiellement miscible à l'eau et une phase aqueuse; c) les rhéin-9-anthrone-8-glucosides retenus après le fractionnement dans la phase aqueuse sont à nouveaux oxydés en sennosides correspondants, ces derniers étant récupérés. L'invention présente également des sennosides A, B et Al obtenus grâce à cette méthode et des compositions pharmaceutiques qui en renferment.
