ABSTRACT A method of fault location on an optical transmission line is disclosed, comprising stationarily inserting a filter on a far end of an optical trans- mission line which is being tested, guiding the light from the transmission line to the filter so as to separate light of a first wavelength to be used for signal transmission from light of a second wavelength to be used for monitoring guiding the light of the wavelength for the signal transmission to the primary optical path, but guiding the light of the wavelength for signal transmission to the transmission line reversely by reflecting the same at a larger reflec- tance, sending the light of the wavelength for monitoring from the near end of the transmission line toward the far end thereof and detecting the amount of the reflected light reflected from the far end of the transmission line, wherein the presence/absence of faults on the line between the near end and the far end is detected by distinguishing whether the reflected light is reflected at a location farther away than the filter or in the transmission line under test. A device for carrying out the method is also disclosed.
