Disclosed is a method for firing black liquor in a recovery boiler for obtaining fumes having a low content of nitrogen oxides, the method comprising the step of introducing a portion of combustion air into the boiler at a distance above a black liquor inlet so as to provide a reducing atmosphere with a residence time of at least about three seconds between the black liquor inlet and the introduction of the portion of combustion air, wherein the reducing atmosphere is generated without extra addition of reduction gases.
