A covering material includes a plurality of elements, each of which has an arbitrary predetermined shape in plan form. Each of the elements are so shaped to allow the elements to closely inter-engage in such a manner that the joints between the elements forms a complex, visually pleasing pattern. The upper surfaces of the elements can be angled, and the height of each of the elements can be varied to provide the complex pattern formed in the covering material with a three-dimensional, faceted appearance.
