In accordance with the invention a method for robust secure network communication is provided. A workstation is connected to a private network via a public network. The private network has access to the public network through a plurality of gateways. To ensure robust secure network communications the initiator of a secure communication session polls the gateway periodically during the course of the communication session to determine a status of the gateway. When the status of the gateway is indeterminate or failed, a new secure communication session between the initiator and a second other gateway is established and the resource is provided with a second destination address for the initiator. In another embodiment according to the invention two private networks, each having a plurality of gateways, are connected to each other via a public network.
