-20- METHOD OF GRADING ITEMS AND AN APPARATUS MATERIALIZING SAME ABSTRACT A method of grading items preferably of root and tuber crops consists in piece-by-piece single-layer feeding of the items to a monitoring zone and determining of the minimum necessary amount of supporting members of the con- veyor portion projected orthogonally onto is the item being handled. The amount of the supporting members ensures the possibility of withdrawing the item with the removal of the supporting members defining this portion in the place of addressing. This place of addressing is specified depending on the grading characteristic which is determined by measuring a current value of the grading characteristic, comparing it with a preset value in accordance with the requi- rement of a user, with subsequent distrubution of the items among the places of addressing using the comparison results. Then the items are transferred to the places of addressing and withdrawn. An apparatus for realization of the method comprises a unit (1) for piece-by-piece feeding of items (2), a conveyor (3) with supporting members (4), a means (5) for directing the items to the places of addressing, a means (6) for returning the supporting members to the initial position, an automatic control system (7) with a device (8) for measuring current values of grading characteristics, actuators (9), a unit (10) for deter- mining the amount of supporting members orthogonally projected onto is the item being handled and a unit (11) for monitoring the motion of the supporting members connected therewith. The device (8) for measuring the current values of the grading characteristics is inter- connected with the unit (10) for determining the amount of the supporting members. The apparatus has provision for various embodiments of the conveyor, that is, linear, longitudinal, horizontal loop rotary conveyors. The sup- -21 - porting members can be mounted horizontally on one conveyor, on two parallel conveyors, or at an angle to each other so as to form a U-shaped channel adapted for accommodating the item being handled. The operation of the apparatus is effected by the automatic control system using the algorythm in accordance with the requirement of the user.
