A B S T R A C T A method and apparatus is described for plating the interior of heavy vessel parts. According to the method, a layer is built up of superimposed, partly overlapping horizontal weld beads by depositing the beads in a submerged arc welding operation using a welding wire and welding powder. The apparatus of the inventionis adapted for welding the interior of a workpiece such as a large tube. It comprises a workpiece feed nozzle supported in the tube at a selected angle to the interior surface of same in respect to the horizontal and in respect to the radius of the tube. Means are provided for feeding the welding powder to the surface, and means are also provided for rotating the tube and the welding powder feeding means and said wire feeding means relative to each other. The invention provides simple and economical way of welding which is insensitive to disturbances and thus avoids interruptions in the welding process. It thus secures a high quality welding.
