ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of hydrogenating heavy oil, asphalt or other heavy residue, which comprises: hydrogenating said heavy oil, asphalt or other heavy residue at a temperature of 250 to 550°C under a pressure of 50 to 700 bar in a reactor in the presence of from 0.1 to 10% by wt. of a one-way catalyst which is the soot obtained from gasification or partial combustion of heavy oil, solid fuels or mixtures thereof; removing the liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon products resulting from said hydrogenation; and separating the hot residue from said hydrogenation reactor at temperatures up to 100°K under the hydroyenation temperature.
