ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to the quantitative assay of low concentrations of biological mono-amines (amines being molecules having a primary or secondary amine function), in which the antibody-binding affinity of biological monoamines is increased on the order of 100,000-fold by a novel chemical conversion of the biological monoamine by means of a novel reagent. The resulting compound, the modified monoamine, may then be incubated with (1) a chemical analogue of the modified monoamine which is marked, thus identifiable in some way, by possessing one of radioactive, fluorescent, or enzymatic activity, and (2) calibrated amounts of antibody produced to specifically bind the modified monoamine. Following incubation, the concentration of the biological monoamine can be derived by determining through the radioactive, fluorescent, or enzymatic activity of isolated analogue-antibody complexes a measure of antibody bound to analogue, thus a measure of antibody bound by the modified monoamine, where the lower the analogue-specific activity, e.g. radioactivity observed in the isolated antibody complexes is, the greater is the modified monoamine, thus the greater the biological monoamine concentration.
