A method of improving a digital image is provided. The image is initially represented by digital data indexed to represent positions on a display. The digital data is indicative of an intensity value I i(x,y) for each position (x,y) in each i-th spectral band. The intensity value for each position in each i-th spectral band is adjusted to generate an adjusted intensity value for each position in equation (I), each i-th spectral band in accordance with where S is the number of unique spectral bands included in said digital data, W n is a weighting factor and "*" denotes the convolution operator. Each surround function F n(x,y) is uniquely scaled to improve an aspect of the digital image, e.g., dynamic range compression, color constancy, and lightness rendition. The adjusted intensity value for each position in each i-th spectral band is filtered with a common function and then presented to a display device. For color images, a novel color restoration step is added to give the image true-to-life color that closely matches human observation.
Description d'une méthode permettant d'améliorer une image numérique. A la base, l'image est représentée sous forme de donnéees numériques, indexées pour représenter des positions sur un dispositif d'affichage. Les données numériques indiquent une valeur d'intensité Ii(x,y) pour chaque position (x,y) dans chaque i-ème bande spectrale. On ajoute la valeur d'intensité pour chaque position dans chaque i-ème bande spectrale afin de générer une intensité de valeur ajustée pour chaque position dans chaque i-ème spectrale, selon l'équation (I), où S est le nombre des bandes spectrales uniques incluses dans lesdites données numériques, où Wn est un facteur de pondération et où "*" désigne l'opérateur de convolution. Afin d'améliorer des aspects de l'image numérique tels que la compression de la plage dynamique, la stabilité chromatique et le rendu de luminosité, chaque fonction d'entourage Fn(x,y) est mise à une échelle unique. La valeur d'intensité, ajustée en fonction de chaque position dans chaque i-ème bande spectrale, est filtrée à l'aide d'une fonction commune avant d'être présentée au dispositif d'affichage. Pour les images en couleur, on introduit une nouvelle étape de restauration des couleurs, qui permet d'obtenir une image en des millions de couleurs qui se rapproche de celle perçue par l'oeil humain.
