Abstract This specification is directed to a method of improving the adhesion between a coating (22) on a glass article (12) and a polyvinyl butyral material (26). the method includes the steps of subjecting the coating (22) on the glass article (12) to a coating operation in which a thin layer of chromium oxide (24) is placed over the coating (22). Thereafter, the chromium oxide (24) coated glass article (12) is subjected to a bonding operation which employs heat and pressure in order to bond the article (12) to the polyvinyl butyral material (26). In accordance with preferred teachings, the layer of chrom- ium oxide (24) has a thickness from about 25 angstroms to about 100 angstroms.
