ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The VI of lubricating oils is improved by treating them with a benzenecarboxylic acid anhydride such as tri- mellitic anhydride (herein TMA). The anhydride forms a complex with certain low VI aromatics in the oil and removal of the complex effects an improvement in the VI of the remaining oil.
