A process for destroying the catalase content of a substance or material. The process comprises contacting the substance or material with ozone for a period of time sufficient to destroy the catalase enzyme. The amount of ozone charged to the substance or material is generally in the range of from about 0.01 to 0.15 wt. %, based upon the weight of the substance or material. The process is most particularly applicable to the treatment of a catalase contaminated fibrous pulp which is to be subjected to a hydrogen peroxide bleaching treatment.
