ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is concerned with a method of refining a pig iron melt by top-blowing oxygen onto the melt while introducing an inert gas at the bottom of the melt and incorporating a cold solid charge into the melt. According to the invention, slag formation on the melt is minimized by adding slag-forming lime to the melt gradually and in pro- portion with the buildup of slag components therein. The method of the invention enables to increase the charge- receiving capacity of the melt.
