A method of increasing the speed at which packing may be replaced in a stuffing box. This method involves the step of providing a stuffing box housing which has an annular packing seat into which packing is received. The packing seat is divided into a plurality of threadedly connected annular nesting segments which, when nested, provide a conterminous internal sidewall for the packing seat. Packing is removed on a segment by segment basis as the stuffing box housing is disassembled.
