ABSTRACT: "A method of installation of composite electrodes in discharge lamps" A method of electrically connecting and securing a composite discharge electrode in an electric gas discharge lamp. A composite discharge electrode is held against a metallic lead-through conductor. A beam of laser light is directed onto a region of the lead-through immediately adjacent the electrode to form a pool of molten metal which wets the composite electrode. The beam of laser light is then removed such that the pool of molten metal solidifies and coalesces with the lead-through and the electrode. The resultant weld provides a good electrical, as well as a physical, connection and permits the use of prefabricated composite sintered discharge electrodes without integral leads along with conventional lead-through wires of the type conventionally used in gas discharge lamps.
