ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a novel plug for use in a manhole casing. The plug comprises an elongated body of yieldable plastic which has a conical tip and a hollowed interior with a locking arrangement on the interior surface of the plug. The locking arrangement comprises a lock surface and a lead surface which interact with the arm of a safety step and provides a secure means for gripping the arm of the step therein. The device provides a more secure arrangement than the prior art devices which are subject to failure which causes severe injuries to workmen.
