A method for the liquefaction of waste plastic includes the steps of: (a) charging a reaction vessel with waste plastic and a slurrying agent; (b) charging the reaction vessel with hydrogen and/or nitrogen processing gas to a pressure of 15-3,000 psig cold (c) exposing the waste plastic, slurrying agent and processing gas to a catalyst; and (d) heating the waste plastic, slurrying agent, processing gas and catalyst to a temperature of substantially 350-500°C for a residence time of substantially 15- 120 minutes. The catalyst is selected from a group consisting of zeolites, metal impregnated zeolites, hydrogen impregnated zeolites, silica-alumina, metal-doped silica-alumina, highly dispersed acid treated metal oxides, iron oxyhydroxides, secondary metal substituted iron oxyhydroxides and any mixtures thereof. A method for the coliquefaction of waste plastics and coal includes substantially the same steps as above with the plastic and coal being mixed in ratios of approximately 1:1 to 5:1.
