ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a method of maintaining the viscosity of the slurry low and stable without deteriorating the properties thereof during the storage over a long period of time by adding alkali metal silicate and/or carbonate capable of forming a water insoluble compound with ions of calcium and/or magnesium to the slurry. The amount of the alkali metal silicate and/or carbonate should be sufficient to maintain the concentration of the ions to a predetermined level by converting the ions to the insoluble compound, and controlled by detecting dissolved ions of calcium and/or magnesium in the supernatant of the slurry, continuously or intermittently.
