A METHOD OF MAKING A COMPATIBLE PITCH FROM COAL TAR, AND/OR PETROLEUM TAR, AND PITCHES THEREOF. ABSTRACT A method of making a compatible pitch by refluxing for several hours in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, a feed consisting at least one member selected from coal tar distillate fractions, and petroleum tar distillate fractions having at least 50% of the carbon atoms in aromatic rings, each fraction having a boiling point of at least 330°C, while blowing air into said feed to produce a compatible pitch. The pitch has (Q.I.) content of less than 4%, a sulphur content less than 2%, a carbon to hydrogen ratio of at least 1.65:1. Surprisingly enough in general these pitches are compatible with one another and the new pitch obtained solely from a petroleum distillate in accordance with the invention may be blended with a new pitch obtained solely from a coal tar distil- late also obtained according to the invention, or with a pitch derived from distillates of coal tar and petroleum. These new pitches have also other unusual characteristics.
