A method of making the surface of a fluoro- chemically treated substrate antimicrobially active by exposing the fluorochemically treated substrate to a compound selected from the group consisting of inorganic acids and organic acids. Exemplary of the acids are sulfuric, hydro- fluoric, hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydriodic, nitric, perchloric, phosphoric, boric, acetic, adipic, anisic, benzoic, butyric, fumaric, gallic, glutaric, glycolic, lactic, lauric, tannic and tartaric acids.
