ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the production of block-resistant coated materials which comprises applying to a substrate an aqueous coating composition containing an emulsion polymer with a minimum film forming tenperature of not more than 50°C, the said polymer containing (a) 80% to 99.5% by weight of monomer units of at least one alkyl acrylate together, if desired, with one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of alkyl methacrylates and styrene, 30% to 99.5% by weight of such units being units of at least one alkyl acrylate containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical; (b) 0.5 to 5% of monomer units of at least one unsaturated polymerisable carboxylic acid or salt thereof; and (c) 0 up to 19.5% by weight of monomer units of one or more futher radically polymerisable monomers; the said polymer being prepared in the presence of a protective colloid comprosing a degraded starch compound which has a viscosity of not more than 15 mPa.s in the form of a 10% solution in N sodium hydroxide at a velocity gradient of D = 523.1 s-1.
