A coated article includes a coating which has a zinc oxide inclusive layer provided as a contact layer under and directly contacting an infrared (IR) reflecting layer of a material such as silver. It has been found that the emissivity (or emittance) of the coated article can be reduced by sputtering a cast target(s) to form the zinc oxide inclusive contact layer - as opposed to sputtering a target formed by plasma spraying or the like. Thus, it has unexpectedly been found that the emissivity and/or resistivity of an IR reflecting layer can be improved (i.e., lowered) by using a cast target to sputter-form the contact layer located immediately under the IR reflecting layer.

L'invention porte sur un article revêtu comportant une couche incluse d'oxyde de zinc servant de couche de contact placée sous et directement en contact avec une couche réfléchissant l'IR faite d'un matériau tel que l'argent. On a trouvé que l'émissivité (ou l'émittance) de l'article revêtu pouvait être réduite en revêtant par pulvérisation cathodique une cible coulée de manière à former une couche de contact d'oxyde de zinc inclue par opposition à un revêtement par pulvérisation cathodique d'une cible formé par projection plasma ou analogue. On a donc découvert de manière inattendue que l'émissivité et/ou la résistivité d'une couche réfléchissant les IR pouvaient être améliorées (c.-à-d. réduite) en utilisant une cible moulée pour former par pulvérisation cathodique la couche de contact située immédiatement sous la couche reflétant les IR.
