KEG/118 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The welding zone of a split tube is cleaned by grease removal using flash heating just ahead of welding in order to evaporate any grease in the zone to be welded. The flash heating can be provided by the heat conduction away from the welding beam if the latter is a laser beam. Alternatively a welding arc or the like can be preceded by a laser beam that just evaporates the grease on the strip metal without welding it.
