ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method of manufacturing mechanical and chemi-mechanical papermaking pulp by disintegrating and beating wood material in at least two steps. The material is coarse-disintegrated in a first step at a concentration exceeding 20%, acid groups in the wood material are neutralized, the mater- ial is diluted to a concentration of 1-10% and beaten in one or several steps. Under these conditions the total energy consump- tion is substantially reduced without reducing the yield and deteriorating the properties of the pulp.
