A method for making strips of a composite elastomeric membrane for application as a roof covering in a continuous process, wherein individual lengths of the uncured composite membrane are joined together by a stepped bevelled lap joint. Two continuous plies of uncured elastomeric material are formed by calender rolls with the longitudinal edges being skived prior to the plies leaving the calendering rolls. The two plies are laminated together in a slightly offset relationship to form a length of composite membrane having stepped bevelled longitudinal edges. Predetermined lengths of the membrane are cut from a generally continuous length of composite membrane, and successive trailing and leading longitudinal edges of said cut lengths are slightly overlapped to form a predetermined length composite sheet having stepped bevelled lap joints. The composite sheet is then vulcanized and then may be subsequently cut transversely to the lap joints to form individual strips of the composite sheet.
