ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of making Si3N4 based cutting tools is disclosed. A uniform mixture of Si3N4 powder, having an SiO2 surface coating, and 4-12% by weight HfO2 is prepared. The mixture is hot pressed to substantially full density and the pressed body is shaped as a cutting tool.
