ABSTRACT Tetra-alkyl and tetra-alkoxyalkyl silicates are made by heating an alkanol or an alkoxyalkanol having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms with finely divided silicon in the presence of an alkali metal carboxylic acid salt. The process of the present invention does not produce undesirable side reactions in which water and other products are formed thereby lowering the reaction yield. Moreover, the silicates produced by the reaction are readily separated from the alkali metal carboxylic acid salt.
