TITLE A METHOD OF MANUFACTURING A FOUNDRY MOULD INVENTOR E.I. Szabo ABSTRACT A foundry mould is made by mixing a binder and and foundry sand in the range 15 to 150 grams of binder per kilogram of sand, the binder consisting of at least one acid selected from the group glycolic acid, lactic acid, .alpha.-hydroxy butyric acid, valerolactic acid, c- hydroxy-caproic acid, tartronic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, mucic acid, citric acid, gluconic acid, and glyceric acid; calcium carbonate as a precipitant for the acid, the amount of calcium carbonate present in the binder components being equivalent to at least 50% of the stoichiometric requirement of the total acid content of the binder components and water in an amount no greater than 2 times the weight of the total acid content calculated on the acid content being in a water free state, and, while the binder components are reacting together and evolving CO2, shaping the mix in to a foundry mould and then shortening the setting time of the binder by continuously removing CO2, as it is being evolved, from the shaped mix. The CO2 may be removed by vacuum or a purging gas (air or nitrogen) or both from the shaped mix.
