Vertical pixel integration (TFT and OLED layers stacked) is provided. A thick planarization dielectric layer is provided between thin-film transistor (TFT)- based backplane and organic-light-emitting diode (OLED) layers. The vertical pixel integration achieves smoothening out/planarizing vertical profiles (in the dielectric) of the structures on the TFT substrate to enable continuity of OLED layers; continuous sidewall coverage by pixel electrode material in the through via profile in dielectric; and roughness of the order ~ 1nm on dielectric and subsequent electrode layer to enable successful OLED fabrication.
