A method of manufacturing a roofing membrane for use in preparing a continuous roofing surface, the roofing surface comprising a plurality of roofing membranes set down in overlapping manner to form a continuously extending roofing surface, the method comprising: (a) providing a longitudinally extending bituminous substrate having an upper surface, a first end, first and second opposed longitudinally extending sides, a first portion extending between the first and second sides at the first end and a second portion extending from the first portion to a position on the longitudinally extending bituminous substrate defining the preselected length of the roofing membrane; (b) adhering granular material to the upper surface of the second portion and releasably securing a covering layer to the first portion; and, (c) removing a segment from the first portion along a line extending from one of the longitudinally extending sides to a position intermediate the front end, the segment selected whereby, when the membranes are applied to a roof, the line defines an interface between the membrane and an overlapping membrane of sufficient length to form the continuous roofing surface.
