Molded articles of aromatic polymer (e.g. polysulfone) are produced by treating the polymer to produce a molded article (e.g. porous membrane or hollow fiber) therefrom having at least a pardon of the surface layer containing units of the formula: (see formula I) where, n is zero or one, at least one of R and R1 is present, m is the degree of polymerization, and when n is zero, R is H and R1 is a labile group which is exchangable with an alkali metal, and when n is one, X n is selected from the group consisting of SO2, O, lower alkyl groups and aromatic groups, and i) when X n is selected from the group consisting of O, lower alkyl groups and aromatic groups, R is H and R1 is a labile group which is exchangeable with alkali (e.g. lithium) metal, and ii) when X n is SO2, R1 is H and R is a site or an alpha carbon group which is reactive with alkali (e.g. lithium) metal, then b) contacting at least a portion of the said surface layer, which is essentially water and solvent free, with alkali (e.g. lithium) metal fluid to metalate therewith, iii) R1 when it is a labile group, and iv) R when it is a site or an alpha carbon group which is reactive with alkali metal, and provide a molded article with only contacted surface layer metalated, then c) contacting at least a portion of the metalated (e.g. lithium) surface layer with at least one substance selected from the group consisting of mono, di- and polyfunctional electrophiles to produce a molded article with alkali metalation thereof substituted to provide modified surface layer.
