Abstract The invention relates to a method of preparing an adjustable- viscosity cationised starch in which1 in a process step in the presence of 10 to 35 wt.% water and preferably 0.01 to 2.00 wt.% of a finely-divided silica and/or silicate (in each case relative to the total amount of mixture) the starch is homogenised with an alkaline oxide or hydroxide or silicate or aluminate or mixtures thereof of an alkylene epoxide and a peroxo compound or a mixture of at least two peroxo compounds and then boiled in known manner at the desired time.
