A method of manufacturing an edge lighted display. A first step involves preparing a rigid planar substrate having a display face and an opposed face by forming a pattern in the substrate which is capable of being illuminated by light passing along a plane of the substrate and forming at least one hole in either the display face or the opposed face of the substrate. A second step involves inserting into the at least one hole in the substrate a light source which radiates light along the plane of the substrate and illuminates the pattern on the substrate.
