A carbon fiber reinforced carbon composite valve for internal combustion engines and the like formed of continuous carbon fibers (15) throughout the valve's stem (11) and head (13) is disclosed. The valve includes braided carbon fiber material (16) over axially aligned unidirectional carbon fibers (15) forming a valve stem (11); the braided (16) and unidirectional carbon fibers (15) being broomed out (18) at one end of the valve stem forming the shape of the valve head (13); the valve-shaped structure being densified and rigidized with a matrix of carbon (21) containing discontinuous carbon fibers (22); and the finished valve being treated to resist oxidation. Also disclosed is a carbon matrix plug containing continuous and discontinuous carbon fibers and forming a net-shape valve head (13) acting as a mandrel over which the unidirectional and braided carbon fibers are formed according to textile processes. Also disclosed are various preform valves and processes for making finished and preform carbon fiber reinforced carbon composite valves.

L'invention porte sur une soupape composite en carbone renforcé par des fibres pour moteurs à combustion interne et analogue constituée de fibres de carbone continues (15) s'étendant sur toute la longueur de la tige (11) et de la tête (13). La soupape comporte du matériau (16) en fibres de carbone tressées recouvrant les fibres de carbone unidirectionnelles (15) alignées axialement formant la tige (11) de soupape. Les fibres tressées (16) et unidirectionnelles (15) s'évasent (18) à une extrémité de la tige de soupape de manière à constituer la forme de la tête (13) de soupape. La structure en forme de soupape est rendue plus dense et plus rigide par une matrice de carbone (21) contenant des fibres de carbone discontinues (22). La soupape une fois terminée est soumise à un traitement antioxydant. L'invention porte également sur un coin fait d'une matrice de carbone contenant des fibres de carbone continues et discontinues et constituant une tête (13) de soupape en forme de filet jouant le rôle d'un mandrin sur lequel les fibres de carbone unidirectionnelles et tressées sont disposées selon des techniques propres aux textiles. L'invention porte enfin sur différentes préformes de soupapes et sur un procédé de fabrication de soupapes en composites de carbone renforcé par des fibres, finies et en préformes.
