ABSTRACT Grid electrodes having improved mechanical and electrical properties are obtained and the reject per centages during the manufacture are reduced when a) a hollow body (grid sleeve) is manufactured according to the hot-gas pyrolysis method; b) the finished grid is provided, by means of hot gas pyrolysis, with a second layer of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite; c) polished substrate cores, in particular of glassy carbon, which are as smooth as possible are used d) a thermal or thermal mechanical after-treat- me?? (at 3000 to 3800°K and 10-500 bar) is carried out, and e) for the further processing of the grid sleeve to the grid electrode the cutting by means of laser beams is preferably used.
