Flue gases exhausted from a lime kiln (10) containing lime kiln dust are treated to produce a high purity calcium carbonate precipitate. This is accomplished by passing the flue gases from the lime kiln (10) through a kiln dust separator (12) so that lime kiln dust containing calcium oxide is removed from the remaining flue gas (15). The lime kiln dust is mixed with water so that an aqueous suspension of the lime kiln dust is formed. Quicklime or calcium oxide in the lime kiln dust is thus hydrated to form calcium hydroxide. The solids within the suspension are then allowed to settle in settling tank (14) so that a clear, saturated solution of calcium hydroxide having a pH of about 12.4 is formed. This solution is then contacted with carbon dioxide gas in reaction tank (16) so that the calcium hydroxide reacts to form a high purity calcium carbonate precipitate. This high purity calcium carbonate precipitate is then allowed to settle from supernatant water of the solution in thickener tank (20). The high purity calcium carbonate is separated from the supernatant water, while the supernatant water is recycled through conduit (24) and used as the water mixed with the lime kiln dust to form the aqueous suspension.

On traite les gaz de fumée qui s'échappent d'un four à chaux (10) et qui contiennent de la poussière de chaux de façon à obtenir un précipité de carbonate de calcium pur. Pour ce faire, on fait passer les gaz provenant du four (10) dans un séparateur (12) de poussière de chaux de façon à séparer des gaz de fumée restants (15) la poussière contenant de l'oxyde de calcium, que l'on mélange à de l'eau de façon à former une suspension aqueuse de poussière de chaux. Ensuite, on hydrate la chaux anhydre ou l'oxyde de calcium contenu dans la poussière de chaux de façon à former de l'hydroxyde de calcium. On laisse les solides contenus dans la suspension se déposer dans un décanteur (14) jusqu'à formation d'une solution saturée claire d'hydroxyde de calcium ayant un pH d'environ 12,4. On met ensuite cette solution en contact avec du dioxyde de carbone dans une cuve de réaction (16) de façon que l'hydroxyde de calcium réagisse pour former un précipité de carbonate de calcium très pur. On laisse celui-ci se déposer dans un épaississeur (20) à partir de l'eau surnageante de la solution. On sépare le carbonate de calcium très pur de l'eau surnageante, que l'on recycle par un conduit (24) et que l'on mélange à la poussière de chaux pour former la suspension aqueuse.
