There is described a method of providing a body of material (14) with a sub- surface mark comprising the steps of directing at a surface of the body (14) a beam of laser radiation (12) to which the material (14) is substantially opaque, the beam energy absorbed at the surface of the material being sufficient to produce localised stresses within the body (14) at a location spaced from said surface without any detectable change at said surface, the localised stresses thus produced being normally invisible to the naked eye but capable of being rendered visible under polarised light.

L'invention concerne un procédé de production d'un corps de matériau (14) ayant une marque en sous-surface et consistant à diriger sur une surface du corps (14) un faisceau de rayonnement laser (12) auquel la matériau (14) est sensiblement opaque, l'énergie du faisceau absorbée sur la surface du matériau étant suffisante pour produire des contraintes localisées à l'intérieur du corps (14) à un endroit espacé de cette surface sans qu'aucun changement puisse être décelé sur celle-ci, les contraintes localisées ainsi obtenues étant normalement invisibles à l'oeil nu, mais pouvant être visibles à la lumière polarisée.
