-42- Abstract of the Disclosure A single step free ligand immunoassay based on the use of a labeled ligand or labeled ligand derivative which is substantially nonreactive with the natural binders present in the sample to be analyzed is improved through the inclusion in the assay of an amount of a blocking agent which is sufficient to prevent significant binding of the labeled ligand or labeled ligand derivative to various binding agents without causing significant release of bound ligand.
