ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A light guide for transmitting thermal radiation from a molten metal to a pyrometer made from a light-permeable refractory corrosion-resistant material. The light guide has a narrow portion in the form of a rod and a large portion having a flat end forming an operating end of the light guide. The large portion is an optical cavity with respect to the narrow portion, producing radiation of the operating end substantially in the form of an absolutely black body, with the ratio of the cross-section area of the narrow portion of the light guide at the place of the narrow portion adjoining the large portion to the area of the large portion not exceeding 0.5. The light guide in the pyrometer measures the temperature of a melt in a metallurgical vessel by mounting the light guide in the lining of the metallurgical vessel with the large portion exposed to the melt and the narrow portion extending through the lining outside the metallurgical vessel to the pyrometer so that the geometrical axis of the light guide passes through the point of the inner surface of the lining, positioned in the zone of the maximum circulation of the melt and lying with respect to the residual level of the melt at a depth not less than the sum of the lining thickness at the said level and the value equal to half transversal size of the large portion of the light guide. The pyrometer measures the characteristics of the thermal radiation caused by the melt in the area directly adjoining the point of the inner surface of the lining and transmitted to the pyrometer with the aid of the light guide.
