METHOD OF MEASURING THE PARAMETERS OF OPTICAL FIBERS Abstract of the Disclosure The present invention relates to a method of measuring the degree of non-circularity of a transparent filament. The method comprises the steps of directing a beam of spatially coherent monochromatic radiation at the filament to thereby generate a complex scattering pattern. At least a portion of the pattern includes contributions from the diffraction, the reflection and the refraction of the beam by the filament. The scattering pattern is spatially, radially disposed about the filament. The method includes the step of counting, at a given scattering angle .theta.R, the number of fringes N1 which occur in the pattern over the range .DELTA..theta.R which range is centered on the given scattering angle. The scattering angle satisfies the relationship: .theta.R + 1/2.DELTA..theta.R < .theta.F where, .theta.F, the fringe cut-off angle satisfies the inequality: m1cos (.theta.F/2 ) > 1, and m1 is the refractive index of the filament. The counting step is repeated for the scattering angle -.theta.R, thereby counting the number of fringes N2. The difference between N1 and N2 is computed and the degree of non-circularity is determined by comparing the difference with the corresponding fringe number differences from priorly measured filaments of the same mean diameter and refractive index.
